Franz John

Franz John was born in 1960 in Marktleugast (Germany).

From 1978-1984 he studied Visual communication at the University of Würzburg.

In 1980 he visited Italy and became an Assistant in the "Arte Povera" studios in Turin, Italy.

Since 1981, Franz John deals with photography without a camera and with the new and old media at the interface between human and machine perception.

In 1996 he was"artist-in-residence« at the Headlands Center for the arts, San Francisco. At the same time he developped his project "Military eyes" within the bunkers at Golden Gate. In the same year his film was released for "Das kleine Fernsehspiel" (ZDF) made with Ayse Bukhara.

Since 1996, the artist participates in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. His CD-ROM "interzone"– an interactive time travel through the Berlin border plant - was published in 1999/2000.

From 2001-2003 he was a visiting faculty at the Ohio State University (Department of art) and had a guest lectureship for 2003 at the University of Paderborn (FB media science).

Franz John received a residence scholarship from the Foundation Künstlerdorf Schöppingen for 2006 and 2007.

In 2007, he was a visiting faculty at the University of Michigan (School of art & design), United States.
